Abstract

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of various extracts of the medicinal plant Commiphora myrrha. Methods: The agar well diffusion technique was followed to perform the antimicrobial activity of the candidate extracts against Gram- positive bacteria (Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus), Gram- negative bacteria (Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus vulgaris, Pseudomonas aeruginosa), and two fungal species (Candida albicans, Apergillus Niger). Results: Methanolic and aqueous extracts of the resin of Commiphora myrrhaat concentration of 100 mg/ml was found to be more active against Gram- negative bacteria (Proteus vulgaris; Klebsiella pneumoniae; Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and Gram- positive bacteria (Bacillus subitilis), and also showed high antifungal activity against (Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger). While chloroform extract of the resin showed moderate activity towards Gram- positive and Gram- negative bacteria ,as well as against Candida albicans, whereas the same extract revealed high antifungal activity against Apergillus Niger. Conclusion: Methanolic, chloroform and aqueous extracts of Commiphora myrrha resin revealed that the selected entire plant had a significant potential effect capable to inhibit the growth of both bacterial and fungal standard species. Keywords: Commiphora myrrha, antimicrobial activity, methanol extract, chloroform extract, standard strains.
