A Study of Nail Abnormalities in Different Dermatological Conditions

Nail abnormalitiesAbstract
Nail abnormalities can serve as key indicators of various underlying dermatological conditions. They may be one of the first signs of systemic or localized disease, and their examination can help in diagnosing a range of disorders, from skin conditions to systemic diseases. This study aimed to investigate the types of nail abnormalities seen in patients with common dermatological conditions and to analyze the correlation between these abnormalities and specific diseases. A total of 150 patients with dermatological conditions, including psoriasis, eczema, fungal infections, and alopecia areata, were examined for nail changes. The most common abnormalities observed were pitting, onycholysis, subungual hyperkeratosis, and Beau’s lines. The study found a strong association between specific nail changes and their corresponding dermatological conditions. Psoriasis, for instance, was strongly associated with pitting and onycholysis, while fungal infections led to discoloration and thickening of nails. The results highlight the importance of comprehensive nail examination in the diagnostic process, as these abnormalities can significantly aid in the management of dermatological diseases.
